Identification

Hairy eyes, yellow bands of 3rd and 4th targa are complete, wing membrane entirely trichose and hind femur black on about basal three-quarters (Vockeroth 1992).

Biology
Larvae of Syrphus torvus feed on several species of aphids (Láska and Starý, 1980).
Distribution
Alaska, Canada, South to California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Europe, Asia (Vockeroth, J.R. 1992).
